A long awaited update

It's been three weeks since my last confession; here's what you missed.

In no particular order I will list some of the things I've done. There was a free performance of a ballet at the Gothenburg Opera House so a bunch of my friends and I got dressed up and saw that. There were two separate pieces. One of them was a modern dance thing and I didn't think it was so terrible, but the other one had a story and narration and I didn't enjoy it one bit.

I found 500 kroner on the tram, so that was pretty cool.

My friend Marcel and I went to an event called language cafe where people can go from table to table and practice speaking different languages. Needless to say, my English is much improved.

Last Tuesday was semla day. I went to an event celebrating semla and their history. Afterwords I went out for fika (coffee) and ate another one. This is a semla.
Such a treat.
I've hosted a couple more group dinner's in my apartment. I have been making chili often and its been well received. I've also been putting leftover chili on my hot dogs, which is just way too exciting for words. Teemu brought a Finnish dessert called mami: it looks like poop.

I've been really getting used to the town and have developed a routine;  Pingisklubb is every Monday night and on Friday afternoons I go to afterwork. I've found a few new places that I like, so I try to mix it up every week.

My Swedish is improving only slightly. I know more words but my pronunciation is atrocious and hardly recognizable.

Last night was St. Patrick's day so I went with some people to the Dubliner. It was pretty cool but the beers were expensive. There was a band that would play three songs and then take an hour-long break all night but people seemed to enjoy that. I was out pretty late so today I'm taking it easy.

2/24/2011

Its been somewhat of an uneventful 2 weeks here. I've been swamped with my classes, but I've been going out in the evenings, enjoying whatever nightlife Gothenburg has to offer. The weather has been ok: cold but at least it hasn't rained. I've been having a bunch of really nice group dinners with a couple of different groups of friends. I'm going to plan a few trips soon so I will have something to write about.

2/20 Weekend wrapup

It's Sunday morning after what has been a pretty uneventful week. I had a lot of classes this week and I didn't really do anything special. So now it's your turn; I'm sure you all have tons of questions that you are just dying to ask me. Please feel free to either ask your questions via the comment link on this post, or sending me an electronic mail (otherwise known as an e-mail), and I will address all of your queries on a one-by-one basis.

København

This past weekend I visited Copenhagen. My friends and I had a wonderful wonderful time. On Saturday, we went to the Carlsberg Museum, walked around Christiania (where you are not allowed to take pictures). Then on Sunday we had breakfast at a Danish bakery, went to Rosenborg castle, went to the art museum, saw the little mermaid, and visited the museum of Danish resistance. Here are some photos from my trip.
This was my breakfast; I had a Danish danish. It was such a treat.

Everyone at the Carlsberg museum.
Me at the little mermaid
Me with Pablo Picasso at the art museum

Here are some photos from Rosenborg castle, home to Christian IV, Denmark's Greatest king.

2/11/2011

It's the end of a very long week. The weather has been awful (cold and rainy), and I've been crazy busy with classes this week. I won't be getting any rest any time soon because I'm leaving for Copenhagen tonight. I'll have a new post with pictures of my trip when I get back on Monday.
Tack för idag!

monday 2/7

I hadn't posted all weekend so I'm sure it was a struggle for you to fill the void left in your life left by my blog. Here's what you missed:
Friday night was the kick-off dance. Everyone went to some club downtown. It wasn't that great but I didn't hate it either. Saturday I had nothing to do so I went to the gym then my friend Marja and I went into town and walked around. I joined the Gothenburg public library. It is the coolest library ever. Next time I go I'll take some pictures so you can see what I mean. After we met some people for ficka (coffee)which is a very popular thing to do on a Saturday. Later, a few French Canadians joined us so we watched the Rangers play the Canadians.
Sunday was pretty boring, I didn't really do much during the day, I went to the gym, and my buddy Mikael and I made cheeseburgers. Much later I tried to watch the Super Bowl but I fell asleep in the second half.
Today was more of the same; I went to the gym, got some homework done and then I had my first Swedish class. It's very difficult. I will have more to say about it later in the week. I have to go now but check back tomorrow for more updates.

This is how I feel all the time here

People say things to me and the sounds are so unnatural that I even have trouble repeating the exact thing I just heard.
